Career Journey

From SCI to a Career in Cybersecurity

Test1 2 · Bachelor of Business · Class of 2026

After graduating from Southern Cross Institute, Aisha Rahman began her career in IT support before moving into cybersecurity. Her journey reflects the value of practical experience, continuous learning and building confidence early in a professional career.

My journey since SCI

After completing my studies at Southern Cross Institute, I started working in an IT support role. That experience gave me exposure to real workplace systems, users and technical problems, and it helped me discover a strong interest in cybersecurity.
I continued developing my skills through practical projects, professional learning and industry certifications. Over time, I was able to move into a cybersecurity-focused position and take on greater responsibility.

My SCI experience

What I remember most about SCI is the practical approach to learning. Group projects, presentations and technical assignments helped me become more confident communicating ideas and working with others.
I also valued studying alongside people from different professional and cultural backgrounds. Those experiences helped prepare me for the collaborative nature of the workplace.

Career and professional journey

I currently work as a Cybersecurity Analyst at Horizon Digital Solutions in Sydney. My role includes reviewing security alerts, supporting vulnerability management, assisting with incident investigations and contributing to improvements in the organisation's security practices.
One of my proudest achievements has been successfully transitioning from general IT support into cybersecurity. It required persistence, additional learning and the confidence to pursue opportunities outside my original role.

Proudest achievement:
Start building professional experience before you graduate. Work on practical projects, develop your LinkedIn profile, connect with people in your industry and apply for opportunities even if you do not meet every requirement.
Your first job does not need to be your dream role. Use it to learn, develop professional relationships and understand which direction you want your career to take.

Staying connected and giving back

I would like to stay connected with Southern Cross Institute by sharing my early-career experience with current students. I would be interested in mentoring students, participating in guest lectures and joining industry or career panels in the future.
